Privacy Policy
Gut Feel analyzes sensitive conversation screenshots. This policy describes the information involved, the companies that process it, how long it is kept, and the choices available to you.
Scope
This Privacy Policy explains how Gut Feel (“Gut Feel,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, discloses, and retains information when you use the Gut Feel iOS app, related support, and backend service. Gut Feel creates an account automatically but does not require your legal name, email address, contacts, or a social login.
Information you provide
We collect the screenshots you select, the name or label you assign to the other person, optional backstory, referral codes, support messages, and onboarding answers such as age, identity, relationship situation, patterns that make someone hard to read, attachment style, intent, whether you asked friends, and how you heard about Gut Feel. Screenshots may contain names, phone numbers, profile images, message content, and other information about you and another person.
Information Gut Feel creates
We create and store a transcript and analysis of the submitted conversation, including messages, signal labels, summaries, advice, verdicts, counts, detected platform and language, safety classifications, and a compact summary of a prior read when you analyze the same person again.
Account, purchase, and referral data
We collect a random user ID, support ID, invite code, authentication tokens, App Attest and DeviceCheck security data, referral relationships and rewards, and purchase records such as transaction, subscription, and plan IDs, subscription status, renewal or expiration dates, and refund or revocation status. If you subscribe through our website, we also receive and store the email address you give at checkout, so that we can send receipts, support your account, and restore your subscription if you change devices. Using Gut Feel does not otherwise require an email address. Apple or Stripe handles your payment card and billing details; Gut Feel never receives your card number.
Usage and device data
We and PostHog collect product events such as screens viewed, onboarding progress, app lifecycle events, read and purchase funnel events, feature-flag assignments, timestamps, and aggregate analysis counts. These events use your random Gut Feel user ID and may include app version, operating system, device type, IP address, and approximate city, region, or country derived from IP. Session replay and advertising identifiers are disabled, and your taps are not recorded as you use the app, with one exception: a burst of rapid taps in the same place is recorded as a sign that something on screen is not responding, together with where on the screen you tapped, which screen you were on, and a description of the control. Conversation text, screenshots, backstory, and person labels are not sent to PostHog.
How screenshots are handled
Only images you select through Apple’s photo picker are prepared for upload. Gut Feel re-encodes them and removes embedded metadata such as EXIF and GPS. Encrypted server-side screenshot objects are deleted after analysis succeeds or fails; a storage lifecycle rule removes abandoned copies within about one day. The resulting transcript and analysis are stored with your account so you can reopen the read.
AI processing
To create a read, we send OpenAI selected screenshot copies together with your person label, relevant onboarding profile, optional backstory, detected platform and language, and, when applicable, a summary of the prior read for that person. OpenAI processes this content to classify and analyze the conversation. OpenAI states that API data is not used to train its models by default; standard abuse-monitoring logs may retain content for up to 30 days unless reduced-retention controls apply, with limited safety and legal exceptions.
How we use information
We use information to create and personalize reads; maintain history; authenticate and secure accounts; process subscriptions, quotas, and referrals; provide support; measure reliability and product usage; test features; prevent fraud and abuse; enforce our Terms of Service; and comply with law. We do not use conversation content for advertising.
When information is disclosed
We disclose information only as needed to operate and promote Gut Feel: to Amazon Web Services for hosting, databases, logs, transient screenshot storage, and delivery of subscription-recovery email; OpenAI for AI analysis; PostHog for product analytics; Apple for photo selection, device integrity, and App Store purchases; Stripe and its Link merchant-of-record service, which is the seller for website subscriptions, for payment processing, billing, tax, receipts, refunds, disputes, and fraud prevention; Meta for advertising measurement, as described in Advertising and measurement below; professional advisers and vendors under confidentiality duties; authorities when legally required; or a successor in a merger, financing, or sale. We require service providers to protect data consistently with this policy and applicable law. Meta is not acting as a service provider in that sense: it uses the advertising events described below for its own purposes rather than only on our instructions.
Advertising and measurement
We advertise Gut Feel on Meta platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. To measure which ads lead to installs and subscriptions, we send Meta a limited set of events: that the app was installed or opened, and that a subscription started, together with the plan name, amount, currency, and an order reference. Meta uses these events for its own advertising purposes, including measuring and targeting ads across other apps and websites. California law calls this sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising.
What accompanies those events depends on your tracking choice. If you allow tracking when iOS asks, we also send a hashed form of your random Gut Feel user ID, your IP address, device and app details, and Apple’s advertising identifier. If you decline, or have not been asked, we send none of those identifiers and mark the event as unconsented, which limits Meta to Apple’s aggregated measurement. You can change this at any time in iOS Settings under Privacy & Security, then Tracking.
We never send conversation content, screenshots, read results, person labels, or onboarding answers to Meta.
What we do not do
We do not serve third-party ads inside Gut Feel, collect your contacts, request precise location or microphone access, or enable analytics session replay. We never send conversation content, screenshots, read results, person labels, or onboarding answers to advertising platforms, and we do not use them for advertising.
Retention
Server screenshot objects are normally removed at the end of analysis and no later than about one day if a job is abandoned. Operational logs are generally kept up to 90 days. Account details, onboarding answers, names or labels, backstory, read results, and referral records are kept while your account is active. After account deletion, product analytics tied only to the deleted random account ID may remain for up to 90 days before deletion or deidentification, and deleted database data may remain in encrypted backups for up to 30 days.
Purchase, subscription, credit-ledger, and webhook records may be retained longer, separated from your deleted account, for accounting, transaction integrity, fraud prevention, dispute handling, and legal obligations.
Data on your device
Gut Feel stores protected copies of uploaded screenshots in the app’s Application Support directory and stores account tokens in the iOS Keychain. Screenshots may be included in your encrypted iCloud device backup depending on your Apple settings. Deleting the app generally removes its local screenshot files, but Keychain items can survive an app deletion. Deleting the app does not delete server records or cancel a subscription.
Your choices and rights
You can choose which photos to submit, cancel your subscription at any time (App Store subscriptions are cancelled in iOS Settings under your Apple Account; website subscriptions through the billing portal linked in your receipt), and permanently delete your Gut Feel account and associated content from Settings in the app. Account deletion does not cancel a subscription. You may also contact us to request access, correction, or export of account information, or to object to analytics or advertising measurement. You can also limit advertising measurement yourself at any time in iOS Settings under Privacy & Security, then Tracking. We may ask for your support ID and other information needed to verify the request. Rights vary by location, and lawful exceptions may apply. We will not discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right.
Age limits
Gut Feel is for people 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are under the age of majority where you live, use Gut Feel only with a parent or guardian’s consent. Where local law sets a higher age for consenting to data processing, such as 16 in parts of the European Economic Area, that age applies instead. If you believe a child under 13 has provided information to Gut Feel, contact us so we can investigate and delete it.
Security and international processing
We use measures designed to protect information, including transport encryption, encrypted cloud storage, protected device files, short-lived access tokens, and Apple device-integrity checks. No system is completely secure. Gut Feel and its providers process information in the United States, including AWS infrastructure in the United States, and may process it in other locations where providers operate.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the product or law changes. We will post the new date and provide additional notice before a material change takes effect when required. We will seek consent if a material new use requires it.
Contact
For privacy questions or requests, use Contact Support in the app or email us. If your request concerns a conversation uploaded by someone else, provide enough information for us to locate it without sending additional sensitive content.
